On the French half of this 37–square–mile island, the vibe is relaxed and upscale. Boutique stores and exquisite restaurants line the streets here. Head up to Fort Louis and take in some enchanting scenery while exploring an enthralling historic site.

The Dutch part of the island is a little more action–focused. Here the area features more development, with high–rise condos, casino hotels, and lively nightclubs. Stroll along the boardwalk in Philipsburg and soak up tranquil views along the Great Bay or hike to the top of a dormant volcano.
